I never felt in any danger doing that (this was almost entirely in the 1st arrondisment). Of my photography tools, I'd rather have my monopod with the Markins M20 on it as a weapon... I'd say that it approaches a mace...

When it comes to ballheads, the RRS BH-40 and BH-55 are wonderful heads. The Markins Q10 and Q20 are also quite good. The lower model numbers are lighter weight heads better for travel and lighter gear. Clamping power...
