I agree with MasterGoa too! Are you viewing your pics at 100 %, comparing them to the D70s pics? Also, posting a picture helps a lot....

Ok, try this out: Turn focus lock to off.A4 Turn the clicker in front of the camera to C. Turn the clicker at the rear of the camera to AF Zone (middle choice) Use 21 focus points. A3 Use 51 point A8 Now, ...

In addition to what MasterGoa told you: Turn off VR on your lens. It is only hurting you at such fast shutter speeds. I have found that VR will produce shots that are less sharp when the shutter speed is 1/500 or faster...
