The Nikon 17-55 2.8 is superb. It's the equal of the 24-70 2.8 on the D700 at half the price....

I have both. Go for the D300. If you look back a few pages you will find my post comparing the D300 and D700. There is no difference in IQ. A huge difference in ISO ability D700 @ 3200 = D300 @ 800 or 1600. The D300 reach...

Definitely D700 and if budget can swing, the 24-70 and the 70-200. The only problem , these two lenses are quite heavy to carry around. I read the 24-120 optics is not the best out there....
