While not up to the standards of the current f2.8 lenses the 35-70 is one of those from that group among older lenses and is an outstanding performer for most....

I just bought a 28-75 f2.8 Tamron for about $350, before you get the 35-70 take a look at this lens. It may be the sharpest lens I own....

I own a D200 owner and loved the 35-70. The only thing I didn't like was how loud it was when focusing in certain situations....

There's something wrong with the lens, return it. My 35-70 F2.8D is excellent and yours is way below the standard for this lens....

David, I have the 35-70 and love it but I do not think it is this sharp at f/2.8...

I too have the set up of the 17-35 and 35-70 2.8 AF model. I love the range for those two lenses. The 35-70 is a very nice lens for the price. I bought the 35-70 from a fellow Nikonians here and paid $400 for an AF...

Hi Rob. I have the 35-70 that I use for portraits but I originally tried the 50mm 1.8. The 35-70 equals the very good image quality of the 50mm... a group shot to single person. So in my opinion the 35-70 is great...
