It sounds like Store By Orientation is turned On. With this setting the AF point will return the location and mode used the last time it was each orientation. This is a useful setting once you remember it. It's a quick way ...

I find the slot positions annoying as well. For me, it’s the CFexpress card slot. The card designers put a tab on the back, but Nikon puts the slot close to the door so that you can’t get to the tab. Art I love takin ...
