I've run into the same issue with focus peaking blocking the subject in these obstructed situations. The Focus Peaking highlights linger until I touch the shutter or focus button - and then I have to start over with peaking ...

Without having changed a thing the camera is now behaving. I think it was because I was shooting in a light but steady drizzle for hours. I think water did something. After drying out it is fine. I will not test its water ...
