Why do you have to switch? Add an FX body and keep the D500 for the extra bump in focal length due to the APS-C sensor for those times when a little longer is better. I shoot a lot of surfers with a D5 and AF-S 400, 600 or 80 ...

Almost sounds like the command dial's contacts are dirty. Usually, it seems like the rear command dial gets wonky on the F5, D3, etc... I've had a few bodies that did that. It typically would occur if I was quickly setting ...
